Super Bowl Preaching 2015
Feb 13, 2015 | Written by Tommy Waltz
Here is a brief update from our time at Super Bowl Outreach in Phoenix. I would like to briefly share what the Lord showed me during my time. There are two points he reinforced in me. These are lessons I never get tired of learning. One, God is consistently at work as his Word is being preached in the Open Air and there are times that God allows glimpses of that fruit. Freddy’s story is an account of this fact. Two, people live in a perpetual façade about reality. The real reality of a spiritual eternity is far from the majority of people’s minds. However, the God of all creation is using us to awake them out of their slumber to this vital truth 2 Cor 4:18. You are a part of this partner’s thank you!!
I asked several of the team write on their experience from this outreach. Here are their accounts of what God did in Phoenix.
Sean (The Power of the Pearl)
As we shared the Gospel at Super Bowl Outreach, I was encouraged by the lack of tracts I saw on the ground. As far as I could tell, an encouraging percentage of people in our sector pocketed this living pearl. Only God knows what is in the heart of any person, and regardless of how they behaved at the time, if they heeded the message preached and handed to them, then as it is written: “Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord” (Proverbs 16:20). The work was hard and there were many who were not happy with us and chose to interrupt and oppose us as we worked for The King, but we were encouraged knowing that God’s word says, “And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!’” (Romans 10:15).
Elisa (The Power of Prayer)
I was greatly encouraged and blessed by the time spent in Phoenix with 90+ preachers and evangelists all of whom have a passion for reaching the lost. I personally do not preach from the box, but I gladly distributed tracts to people as they passed by, ready to have one-on-one conversations when the opportunity arose. I also offered up prayers to the Lord on behalf of the preaching being done, and for one-on-one conversations going on around me. I continue praying for those who heard the Gospel – that they will be saved, and when they share their testimony, sometime in the future, it will include the phrase “I was at the Super Bowl in Phoenix, it was February of 2015… I was walking down the street minding my own business when …” All glory to the Father!
Freddy ( The Power of Word to Convict)
We serve an all-powerful God and there is power in the preaching of the Gospel (Rom1:16). God is sovereign and He was definitely at work in the days leading up to the Super Bowl. Lost sinners were either cursing him or getting saved. One of the many lost sinners that He drew is an adulterer that saw his need for Jesus.
This young man was intensely listening to the preaching. I could see that he wanted to hear the entire message but was unable to because the preacher was being heckled left and right. So I pulled him aside and shared the Gospel with him. I started by asking if he had kept the law (Rom 7:7). I also shared with him what Jesus did (John3:16) on the cross. He confessed to me that he had cheated on his wife and that’s why he had stopped to listen. I could tell at this point that he was so hungry for God. He then asked what he had to do to get saved. I replied in two words, “repent and believe”. We kept conversing and then he asked for a Bible. He was determined to go home right away to pray to God and read the Bible.
