How Are You Doing?

I will be dating myself, but does anyone remember the movie Money Pit with Tom Hanks? He bought this house that he just kept feeding money into for repairs. The repairs never seemed to stop. Outwardly the house did not look that bad but as the movie showed the interior of the home, it just began falling apart.

Internal dilapidation does not happen overnight. It is the same way with our lives, so this is why we need to do internal maintenance every year. How do we go about doing this internal maintenance? Join me for the next few paragraphs to find out. When it comes to putting our lives under the microscope of specific soul-piercing questions, it is never easy, but it is needed in this day and age where people call evil good and evil good. It does two things. It grows us in Christ-likeness and encourages others in our sphere of influence to see the truth that we are living out.

1 Timothy 4:16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

In this article, we are going to cover what our reading habits look like, do some personal evaluation, and spiritual evaluation. Once we have evaluated then we can set some goals for 2020; not resolutions that are bound to fail.

I How did you do on your reading list this year?

Every year you need to set a goal on how many books you want to read. Put them down on a list and go through them. However, always leave room for books that will be referred to you by friends, teachers, and people you respect. How do you come up with a balanced reading plan for the year so that you are not just gorging yourself on things that you love to read? I have to admit my weakness is apologetic books. That is my default reading mode.

Here are nine categories any balanced reader should be dabbling in yearly.

  • how you are going to read through the Bible in a year

  • apologetics

  • leadership books

  • Biblical theology

  • parenting and marriage

  • biographies

  • other worldviews

  • classic novels

  • books referred to you by friends or references during sermons or lectures you heard

I am sure there are categories that you can change according to what stage of life you are in, but this is a working, reference point that you can adjust according to your personal need.

II A personal check-up to evaluate your mental and physical health?

This section is just going to be full of questions that will help peel back the layers of your mind and heart. This is where we are going to get into the interior of your life. Answering these questions will help you greatly. Do the honest, hard work that these questions will require, and you will not regret the fruit they will produce.
