Why I Love The Trinity
I am writing this article to help my readers better understand why we need to love the Trinity. It is in the Trinity that man can comprehend God rightly. The Trinity is one theological truth of God that separates true Christians from cults and false beliefs. This is my review of the first three chapters of James White's book The Forgotten Trinity; we will understand why the Trinity has been forgotten, a definition of the Trinity, and, for our champion partners, why secret things belong to God, and the revealed belong to us.
Emotions Versus Revealed Truth
In today's culture, people put so much emphasis on feelings. There is a deprecation of a desire to know God and know Him properly. People are too careless in thinking about the most precious gift realized to humanity – the Triune God. God wants people to have a more profound knowledge of Him. This is brought about by understanding the God of the Holy Bible on His terms, not by our emotions.
True worshippers must worship God as He exists, not how we feel He may be. If we don’t love God for who He is but who we make him to be, this is the definition of idolatry. According to the author, the men of old who pursued God had two things in common- suffering and a love for the contemplation of God’s attributes and works. Too many today are caught up in worldly pursuits instead of seeking to understand this triune God better. When we rightly understand the Trinity, we humbly appreciate that God's ways and thoughts are altogether higher than we will ever be. The highest and most significant achievement is understanding the one true living God.
This is the reason so many cults and false beliefs deny the Trinity. Humbly understanding the Trinity is knowing the one true living God rightly. In this book, the reader will rightly understand and grow in their love for God and, in return, appreciate the beautiful mystery of the Triune God. I highly encourage all my readers who have never read this book to do so soon.
A Definition Of The Trinity
The definition of the Trinity is as follows; “In the one being that is God, there exist eternally three co-equal and co-eternal persons, namely the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.”[1] God is unique compared to humans, and our language can fall short when explaining God thoroughly; however, Dr. White gives an accurate and concise view of what the Bible communicates about God’s nature.
There are three major points that this definition has brought out for us. I have memorized this definition and used it in conversations with Muslims, atheists, and cult members to help explain concisely who God is in His triune nature. The first point covered in this definition is that God is one in being. All monotheists hold to this part of the definition of God whether you are a Jew, Christian, or a Muslim. It is in His being that God is undivided, unique, and indivisible. The author then moves on to his second point.
The second point is that there are three separate persons. This is not to say that they are three separate beings. This distinction makes the proper view of God, namely called Trinitarian Monotheism. We are thinking about one what and three who’s. What pertains to the one being of God pertains to the three Who’s also: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
All three of these persons are co-equal and co-eternal. These persons have uniquely existed in relationship to each other eternally. The Trinity reveals the truth that comes from the Bible itself. We must believe all the Bible says about any given topic. Along with James White, I am a finite person trying to describe something universally unique. Dr. White describes the Trinity as a triangle, with each side describing part of the Trinity. One side is monotheism, the other equality, and the other three persons. If you have never read Dr. James White’s book, “The Forgotten Trinity,” I would encourage you again to do so soon.
The Secret Things Belong To God, But The Revealed Truth Belongs To Us
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deuteronomy 29:29)
Dr. White started this chapter with Deuteronomy 29:29. It is evident in scripture that God's ways and thoughts are higher than ours. When understanding the Trinity, we must remember that we can understand it rightly but never exhaustively. God has revealed Himself in the Bible so that He can be understood rightly. God will not allow the proper understanding of Him to be polluted, so He gave the Bible to us. False views of God are that He is just one God among many Gods. Scripture does not reveal this. Scripture shows that there is one God, and all these other gods are false deities that lead people away from the one true living God. God has revealed this to us so we can worship Him correctly and not be deceived because He has revealed the truth.
God exposes false gods as the frauds that they are. Read below,
You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am He. Before Me, no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.” (Isa 43:10).
He also states that people who chase after and worship these gods are like prostitutes, paying their lovers to lay with them. God then challenges all gods who claim to be like Him to do what He does: tell the future before it happens. This is a picture of the one true living God allowing these deities (which reflect rebellious people) to prove themselves ( Isa 45:21-22). God is giving this as an opportunity so they can prove why Israel should worship them instead of the one true living God.
“Declare and present your case; let them take counsel together! Who told this long ago? Who declared it of old? Was it not I, the Lord? And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none besides me. “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.” (Isaiah 45:21-22)
These false deities are nothing like Him; no one or no deity can be compared to Him. He is holy, and there is no one like Him. He does not exist in the same mode as we exist. God is different from us in many ways. One of those is that He is not limited to time and space. The worship of God is not a matter of where but how. We see this when Jesus is teaching the Smartian woman at the well. There will come a time when people will not just worship in Jerusalem but also in Spirit and Truth.
He is beyond time; this is what it means to be from everlasting to everlasting. God lives, dwells, and defies our categories and weak attempts to comprehend Him completely. There is a fundamental difference between God and man on the level of being. Man lies; God does not. Man cheats, God does not, etc. The doctrine of the Trinity is based on a firm foundation. The foundation of an eternal God who is an unchanging mono-eternal being that is three co-equal and co-eternal persons: the Father, The Son, and the Spirit.
I am thankful God did not hide His glorious Triune nature from us. I can promise that many hidden things about this great God are too lofty and mind-blowing for us to wrap our finite minds around; however, we have eternity to search out the infinite nature of God. We access His amazing kingdom by placing saving faith in Jesus and repenting of the sins that we have committed against His holy nature. Until next month, go out and share the truth of the Gospel because the truth worth sharing is the truth that transforms.
